Projects › East African Solar Lanterns

Kerosene lamps are widely used for lighting in Africa. They are expensive to run (particularly with the current high price of oil), they can induce respiratory illness due to the fact that they are operated in enclosed spaces and they are a fire risk. This project sees lanterns converted to solar power or replaced entirely with purpose-built solar units. The adaptation process involves the installation of a small solar panel and rechargeable batteries along with LEDs. So in addition to the eradication of the risks and problems listed above, there is a carbon saving and the converted lamps are brighter.
co2balance is establishing a network of facilities, providing local jobs, to manage the conversion process.
