co2balance.com have been recognised at a Green Apple Awards for Environmental Excellence, taking home a “Green Champion” award for their work on eco-tourism with Cornish hotel Bedruthan Steps.
The Green Apple Award for Environmental Excellence showcases companies that have demonstrated a significant impact on improving the environment, and over the past year Cornish hotel Bedruthan Steps have been working with co2balance.com to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that they emit and achieve Carbon Zero status.
The Awards Ceremony was held on Friday 3rd November at the Tower of London, and presenting the awards was TV personality and environmentalist David Bellamy.
Over the past year, co2balance.com has been working with Bedruthan Steps Hotel to create one of Britain’s first “Carbon Zero” hotels. The scheme enables Bedruthan Steps Hotel to offer its visitors the opportunity for a tree to be planted each time they stay, in order to absorb the carbon dioxide produced during their travels to the hotel.
Since the start of the scheme, over 500 trees have been planted at co2balance’s plantations. All future trees will be planted in the new Bedruthan Wood, which is being established on land near Roche in Cornwall. This former agricultural land is being turned into woodland through the planting of native broadleafed trees.
The scheme will result in around 1,100 trees being planted each year, which equates to over 990 tonnes of carbon being absorbed into the trees rather than remaining in the atmosphere, where it contributes to global warming.
