Monday 12th November 2007

Your holidays in the sun will not “Cost the Earth” as Cortijo Valverde Rural Hotel becomes “CarbonZero”
Cortijo Valverde Rural Hotel in Andalucia has become one of the
1st “CarbonZero” Rural Hotel in Andalucia Spain, thanks to their pioneering ‘Responsible Tourism Programme’ implemented in conjunction with co2balance.com.
“As a CarbonZero Hotel in Andalucia, we take “Responsible Tourism” and our environmental impact very seriously. We have taken every step we can to minimise the impact of tourism on the local and global environment by reducing our CO2 footprint wherever possible.” Said owners Ali & Caroline Zartash-Lloyd.
“Andalucia has been greatly impacted by Global Warming, with a long-term draught since 2000, and increasing temperatures during the Autumn and Winter. However, Tourism is critical to the local economy with some estimates putting the Tourism contribution to Andalusia’s economy at over 50% of GDP with a similar percentage for Direct and Indirect employment in the region. Therefore it is critical to ensure continuing growth in Tourism for Andalucia, guaranteeing continued employment and prosperity whilst reducing the impact on the environment.” Ali Zartash-Lloyd continued.
“Cortijo Valverde has made considerable investment and effort in means and methods of reducing Carbon emission and Carbon Footprint, so that our guests can enjoy the wonders of Andalucia, safe in the knowledge that their enjoyment of their holiday is not ‘Costing the Earth’” continued Ali Zartash-Lloyd
Caroline Zartash-Lloyd commented “We discussed our “Responsible Tourism” programme with a number of companies but we finally chose co2balance.com as we found their team responsive, whilst their projects were multi-faceted with additional benefits and positive impact on the lives of the individuals and communities. Hence we turned to co2balance.com to reduce our carbon footprint (the amount of carbon dioxide our business produces), and then offset the remaining amount.”
co2balance.com offers several ways to offset companies’ carbon footprints and help make them become ‘CarbonZero’; through energy efficiency projects in Kenya and renewable energy projects in East Africa.
Mark Simpson, Director of co2balance.com said, “We are very pleased that Cortijo Valverde is implementing CarbonZero travel for their guests. It demonstrates their commitment to the environment They are leading the way in this very beautiful area of Spain, raising awareness of environmental issues and initiating a scheme that helps Fight Climate Change”.
Cortijo Valverde provides an option for its guests to make voluntarily payments to off-set the CO2 produced by their flight to Malaga. Cortijo Valverde will also fund the cost of CO2 off-set throughout 2008 for guests staying for 7-nights or more.
