Kenya Energy Efficiency Update
Monday 1st October 2007
co2balance Kenya continues to progress well, and our very own Dave Hooper went to visit the Kenyan team to move forward several new energy efficiency projects. One of which is distributing “Solar Ovens” to poor communities in Nairobi.
The Solar Ovens replace the use of wood fires to cook on, which releases carbon dioxide. In addition to the saving in greenhouse gases, the reduced need for firewood leads to a corresponding reduction in the amount of time spent collecting the material (it does not totally remove the need as even in Kenya there are times when the sun is not shining!) The removal of smoke and fumes from the wood (they have no chimney) also eliminates a serious source of respiratory illness.
It is intended to roll out this project to many other major conurbations in East Africa as the funds become available.
